No Farmers, No Food
Debonnaire Acres is a family run, small scale farming business owned by Nigel and Sharon Roberts and their two teenage sons. Having been common land in the 19th century (and even having a roman ferry port many moons ago) it was then turned into a poplar tree plantation producing material for matchsticks and coffins.
Having been in the family since 1982, it is now an established smallholding selling quality woodland raised, rare breed meat boxes, produce, plants, eggs, seeds and more.
Since turning our land into a working smallholding we have closely followed a land management plan with the help of local conservation experts and the Forestry Commission to increase the biodiversity, encourage more wildlife and give it a helping hand. We achieved this by redigging out the natural wildlife pond which was originally created in the 80's to encourage wildfowl, kingfishers, dragonflies, amphibians and
otters, creating wildlife corridors and planting hundreds of native shrubs, plants and trees and digging out drainage ditches. We have also erected many nest boxes, bat boxes and barn owl nest boxes and regular visitors on the feeders include nuthatch, woodpeckers and a beautiful flock of long tailed tits, along with all the regular, more common garden birds. Other regular sites include red deer (we've counted 42 at any one time!) and our resident barn owl. Our pond has been host to a variety of ducks, waders, insects and amphibians and each year we enjoy watching the nesting moorhens and mallards.
Here we are also 100% off Grid. We generate all our own electric via solar power and have a borehole with a series of filters which provides clean drinking water for the animals we keep. We make our own compost on site, collect mostly our own seeds and never, ever use pesticides or chemicals. We even have our very own logging pony who has helped move lots of fallen trees our vehicles couldn't access and our native Hebridean sheep and rare breed goats help to clear brambles, nettles and weeds, with our pigs clearing areas for produce growing.
We pride ourselves on the highest welfare standards for all our animals, we will only work with the best butchers and abattoirs who do not participate in any hallah practice's and we are lucky to have great Veterinarian's.
We are extremely proud of our sustainable, low carbon, off grid footprint.
So far we have and are still achieving our goals and dreams....but it doesn't end there! Keep up with our Social Media below to find our what we are up to next, including our plans for bee keeping, charcoal burning, a hog roast service and more.
